How to Check Who Read Your Message in a WhatsApp Group

What do the grey and blue ticks actually mean in a group?

A single grey check means the message left your phone. Two grey checks mean it reached WhatsApp’s servers and was delivered to every participant’s device. Two blue checks only appear once every single member has opened it — not most of them, all of them — which is exactly why blue ticks feel rare in anything bigger than a small friend group.

That all-or-nothing signal is useful at a glance, but it can’t tell you which specific person still hasn’t seen your message. For that, you need the message info screen covered below, not the tick color.

How to check who read a group message on Android

1. Open the group chat and find the message you sent that you want to check.
2. Tap and hold the message until the selection toolbar appears at the top of the screen.
3. Tap the three-dot menu, then Info — on some app versions a small “i” icon appears directly in the toolbar instead, which does the same thing.
4. Read the two lists. Read by shows everyone who has opened the message, each with a timestamp. Delivered to shows everyone whose phone has it but hasn’t opened it yet.

How to check who read a group message on iPhone

1. Open the group and locate your sent message.
2. Tap and hold it, then choose Info from the menu that pops up.
3. Or skip the menu entirely — swipe left on the message and it jumps straight to the same info screen.
4. Scroll the Message Info screen. Read By sits at the top with timestamps, Delivered To sits below it.

Tapping any name on that list opens a one-on-one chat with that person directly, which is handy if you need to follow up with whoever hasn’t seen an important message yet rather than posting a public “did everyone see this??” in the group itself.

Checking read status on WhatsApp Web or Desktop

The message info screen isn’t phone-only. Open the group inside WhatsApp Web or the desktop app — both mirror whatever’s on your phone once linked — right-click the message you sent, and choose Info from the context menu. The same Read by and Delivered to breakdown opens in a side panel instead of a full screen, but it’s the identical data.

This is the quicker route if you’re moderating something like a busy university WhatsApp group from a laptop between classes and don’t want to keep switching to your phone every time you post a notice.

Can you turn off read receipts for just one WhatsApp group?

No. This is the part people expect to work and it doesn’t. WhatsApp’s privacy toggle, under Settings > Account > Privacy > Read Receipts, is a single global switch, and it only ever governs one-on-one chats to begin with — WhatsApp says so directly in its own help documentation, which is explicit that switching it off does not carry over to groups.

Common mistakes

• Trying to check who read someone else’s message. The Info screen only exists for messages you personally sent — there’s no way to check read status on a message a different member posted.
• Reading too much into “Delivered to” alone. It can mean they’re ignoring the group, or it can just mean their phone hasn’t synced since you posted. Don’t assume the worst from one glance.
• Checking after deleting the message. Delete for everyone and the message info goes with it — there’s no way to recover who read it once it’s gone.
• Expecting the setting change to work retroactively. Turning read receipts off doesn’t hide status on messages sent before you changed it, and it never touches groups regardless of timing.
• Assuming a huge professional group of several hundred people behaves the same as a small one. The feature still works at any group size, but scrolling a 500-name list to spot one person is a lot less practical than it is in a group of twenty.
