How to Hide Your Name, Number & Identity in a WhatsApp Group

To hide your name in a WhatsApp group, open WhatsApp Settings, tap your profile at the top, and clear or replace the Name field — the change is account-wide, not specific to one group. What it won’t do is hide your phone number: unless you’re inside a Community with Phone Number Privacy switched on, your number is exactly what shows up in place of a blank name, visible to anyone who hasn’t already saved you as a contact.

How to change or hide your name, step by step

There’s exactly one setting for this, and it’s the same one whether you’re trying to disappear or trying to make sure your real name finally shows up correctly.

1. Open WhatsApp Settings.
   Android: tap the three-dot menu in the top-right corner and choose Settings. If your app has already switched to the newer bottom navigation bar, tap the Settings tab instead — WhatsApp is rolling this layout out gradually, so which one you see depends on your app version.
   iPhone: tap Settings in the bottom-right corner of the main screen.
2. Tap your profile at the top of the Settings screen. Your photo and current display name sit in that first row on both platforms.
3. Tap the Name field. Delete everything in it to leave it blank, or type something that isn’t your real identity — a nickname, initials, or anything else. WhatsApp accepts letters, numbers, and emoji, up to 25 characters.
4. Tap Save or the checkmark. Give it a moment to sync. If a group still shows your old name a few minutes later, force-close WhatsApp and reopen it rather than assuming the change failed.

Going the other direction works identically. If you’re trying to fix a group where your name isn’t showing up — or you want to make sure it’s visible instead of hidden behind a saved nickname someone else picked — type your actual name into that same Name field and save it. There’s no separate toggle for “show my name” versus “hide my name”; it’s one field, and whatever you type into it is what unsaved contacts see everywhere.

Why hiding your number is a different problem

This is where most name-hiding guides quietly stop being accurate. Clearing your display name changes what people see, but the underlying phone number is still attached to your account and still surfaces the moment there’s no name covering it up. WhatsApp doesn’t give regular groups a way around that.

The Community-only exception

If your group is part of a WhatsApp Community — a container that bundles several related groups (like “Announcements,” “General,” “Q&A”) under one set of shared admins — there’s a setting called Phone Number Privacy that actually hides your number from other members. It sits inside Community Settings, below the encryption notice. Turn it on and other community members stop seeing your digits, even without you having to touch your display name at all.

A plain group with no Community wrapped around it — which is what most people mean when they say “WhatsApp group” — was never given this option. If you’re not sure whether yours qualifies, open the chat and check for a Community name above the group name at the top; if there isn’t one, you’re in a standalone group and this setting won’t appear no matter where you look.

The catch: WhatsApp’s own documentation is clear that community admins can still see your number regardless, and so can anyone who already has it saved as a contact. It also only applies inside Communities — a standalone group with no Community wrapped around it doesn’t have this option at all.

What’s coming: WhatsApp usernames

WhatsApp is in the middle of rolling out usernames — a handle like @yourname that you can hand to someone instead of your number. Reservations opened on June 29, 2026, the first countries went live from July 7, a wider group followed on July 20, and the global rollout is scheduled from September 2026. Once it reaches your account, it becomes the real fix for this problem: share the handle, never the digits. Until then, if you’re not in one of the early regions, the honest answer is that a standard WhatsApp group still doesn’t let you fully hide your number.

Hiding your profile photo, About & last seen too

Your name and number aren’t the only identity signals sitting in a group. Your profile photo, About text, and last-seen status are all visible to other members by default, and all three are controlled separately from Settings → Privacy.

• Profile photo: Settings → Privacy → Profile photo, then choose “My Contacts,” “My Contacts Except…,” or “Nobody.”
• About: the same screen, same three choices — useful if your About line mentions your name, job, or anything else identifying.
• Last Seen & Online: Settings → Privacy → Last Seen and Online, with the same visibility options. Note that hiding your Last Seen also hides other people’s Last Seen from you — WhatsApp ties the two together.

None of these are group-specific controls. They apply across every chat and every group you’re in at once, the same way the Name field does.

WhatsApp has also rolled out a more targeted option on top of the three broad choices above: instead of picking “My Contacts” or “Nobody” as a blanket rule, you can now exclude specific people one at a time from seeing your profile photo, About, or Last Seen — useful if the only person you’re actually trying to stay private from is one particular member of a group, not your entire contact list. Look for “My Contacts Except…” under each of the three settings, then add that person by name.

Mistakes people make trying to go anonymous

• Assuming a blank name equals invisible. It just swaps your name for your raw phone number, which a lot of members find more suspicious than a name would have been in the first place.
• Forgetting the change is account-wide. Clear your name to dodge one group, and every unsaved contact in every other chat you have sees the change too — not just the group that prompted it.
• Expecting to hide from the admin. In a standard group, whoever runs it can open the participant list and see every phone number attached to it, display name or not.
• Treating Communities and usernames as available right now. Phone Number Privacy only exists inside Communities, and usernames are still mid-rollout as of this guide — most people on a standard group still can’t fully mask a number yet.
• Giving up after one save that “didn’t work.” Nine times out of ten this is a sync delay, not a failure — restart the app before assuming the setting is broken.
