This works the same whether you’re adding one person or several at once, and you’ll need to be a group admin to see the option at all.
- Open the group you want to add someone to from your Chats list.
- Tap the group’s name at the top of the screen to open Group Info.
- Find the add option.

- Search for or select contacts. You can tick multiple names at once if you’re adding several people in a single go.
- Tap the checkmark or Add button to confirm.
If the person you’re trying to add has their Privacy > Groups setting locked to My Contacts or My Contacts Except, and you’re not saved in their phone, WhatsApp won’t drop them straight into the group. Instead it sends them a private invite in a one-on-one chat, and they have three days to tap Join before it expires. How to remove a member from a WhatsApp group

- Open Group Info by tapping the group’s name at the top of the chat.
- Scroll to the Participants list.
- Tap the name of the person you want to remove.
Android: on some older builds you’ll need to tap and hold their name instead of a single tap.
- Tap Remove from Group, then confirm by tapping Remove again.

How many members can a WhatsApp group hold?
As of 2026, a single WhatsApp group can hold up to 1,024 participants, including admins — the same cap applies on Android, iPhone, and WhatsApp Web. That’s grown steadily over the years from an original limit of 256, so if you’re working from an older article that quotes a smaller number, it’s out of date.
If 1,024 genuinely isn’t enough — a large alumni network or a big customer base, for instance — the better move isn’t cramming more people into one group. Done this way, WhatsApp carries over your profile, display name, individual chats, and — importantly — every group membership you already have. Admins and other members simply see your new number appear in the participant list; nobody has to re-add you. - Trying to add a number you haven’t saved as a contact. The Add Participants search pulls from your phone’s address book, so if the person isn’t saved there, they usually won’t show up in the results no matter how you spell their name.
- Confusing “remove” with “block.” Removing someone takes them out of that one group only. It doesn’t stop them from messaging you directly, and it doesn’t stop a different admin from adding them right back in.
- Removing several people back to back in a short window. WhatsApp’s spam-prevention systems can flag an account that adds or removes many participants in quick succession, sometimes temporarily limiting what that account can do. Spacing changes out avoids this.
- Assuming a removed member loses access to everything instantly. Photos, videos, and messages they already downloaded stay on their device. Removal stops new messages from reaching them; it doesn’t reach back and erase what they already saved.
