Which Canada group should a Pakistani newcomer join first?

“Canada job with LMIA” offers in WhatsApp groups: the red flags

Fake Canadian job offers are the biggest risk in any Canada group aimed at South Asians. Before you reply to one, check these:

1. Someone wants money for the job or the LMIA. Under Canadian rules an employer cannot recover the cost of a Labour Market Impact Assessment from the worker, and charging a foreign worker a fee to be hired is a classic scam pattern.
2. The “consultant” won’t give a licence number. Paid immigration advice must come from a licensed consultant (RCIC) or a lawyer. Search the name on the College of Immigration and Citizenship Consultants (CICC) public register before sharing documents.
3. The offer letter has no verifiable employer. Look the company up yourself, call its published number, and never rely on a phone number given in the chat.
4. A visitor visa is sold as a work route. Promises that you can “come on visit and convert” are a warning sign — check your options on the official IRCC website instead.

Renting a room through a WhatsApp group without getting scammed

Rental fraud targets newcomers who are still abroad. Don’t send a deposit for a place you or someone you trust hasn’t seen, and pay by a traceable method (e-Transfer to a named person with a written agreement) rather than gift cards or crypto. In Ontario, the only deposits a landlord may legally take are a rent deposit of up to one month’s rent (applied to your last month) and a refundable key deposit — an extra “holding fee” demanded over WhatsApp is a red flag. Other provinces have their own tenancy rules; check the provincial residential tenancies office before signing.

WhatsApp groups vs official help for Pakistanis in Canada

Groups are good for peer experience (“which bank opened an account without credit history?”). For anything official, go direct: study permits, work permits and PR through IRCC; passport, NICOP and attestation through the High Commission for Pakistan in Ottawa or the Pakistan consulates in Toronto and Vancouver. When sending money home, use a bank, a licensed money-transfer service or a Roshan Digital Account — never an informal hundi/hawala contact from a group.

How to join safely

1. Pick one group per need (housing, jobs, study) — joining ten groups at once floods your phone and exposes your number widely.
2. Tap Join; WhatsApp shows the group name and description before you commit. If the name doesn’t match the card, back out.
3. Set Settings → Privacy → Profile photo / About to “My contacts” so strangers in large groups can’t see them.
4. Read the pinned rules and ask your question once; admins in newcomer groups remove repeat posters.
5. Leave and report any group that starts pushing paid job offers, “guaranteed visas” or investment schemes.

How we checked these links

On 30 September 2026 we opened every invite on this page and read the group name WhatsApp returned. We kept a link only if the name matched a Canada topic useful to Pakistani newcomers, and removed anything revoked, off-topic, or pushing “earn from home” schemes, paid immigration services, or claims to be an “official” jobs channel. We don’t list member counts or promise a group is Pakistani-only unless its name says so. Links can be reset by admins at any time — if one fails, tell us via the submit page.
